Suomen Teollisuuskylmä and Insta collaborate in the delivery of industrial refrigeration systems tailored to customer needs, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The partnership, which began in 2014, has developed into a reliable and customer oriented collaboration built on open dialogue and mutual trust.

Suomen Teollisuuskylmä is a specialist in industrial refrigeration, designing and delivering industrial cooling systems and heat pump solutions, as well as providing maintenance services throughout their lifecycle. The company serves customers in sectors such as the food and process industries, delivering refrigeration solutions for logistics centers as well as ice rinks and ice halls. Operating nationwide, Suomen Teollisuuskylmä covers the entire lifecycle of refrigeration systems — from design and implementation to maintenance and decommissioning.
“In industry, cooling is required in almost every segment in one form or another. In addition, heat recovery implemented with heat pumps has become increasingly common,” says Markku Purhonen, Business Director responsible for electrical and automation systems at Suomen Teollisuuskylmä.
Founded in 2011, Suomen Teollisuuskylmä builds on decades of experience: its key personnel have worked in industrial refrigeration contracting and maintenance since the 1980s. Since its establishment, Suomen Teollisuuskylmä has grown significantly and strengthened its position as a specialist in industrial refrigeration. In 2024, the business of Suomen Teollisuuskylmä Oy and its approximately 30 professionals in Tampere became part of Caverion.

Process expertise and refrigeration technology from Suomen Teollisuuskylmä, automation expertise from Insta
Suomen Teollisuuskylmä and Insta work together in customer projects, combining complementary expertise. While Suomen Teollisuuskylmä is responsible for refrigeration process design and compressor units, Insta delivers automation, instrumentation and electrical engineering, as well as automation cabinets including testing and commissioning.
“Suomen Teollisuuskylmä has in‑depth expertise in refrigeration processes, and based on their specifications we implement the automation,” explains Joonas Eirola, Team Manager at Insta’s Food & Chemical Industry unit.
The collaboration began in Nekala, Tampere, in 2014, when Suomen Teollisuuskylmä needed automation programming support for a project at Valio’s Tampere dairy. The following year, cooperation continued at Valio’s new snack factory in Riihimäki. Since then, the collaboration has developed into a long‑term partnership covering multiple industrial refrigeration projects.
“As the number of projects increased, we started looking for a partner with whom we could carry them forward efficiently. From that point on, we have delivered these refrigeration plant projects together,” Purhonen recalls.
The delivered refrigeration units, consisting of compressor packages, are custom‑designed to meet each customer’s requirements. A typical compressor package consists of compressors, auxiliary equipment and piping, measuring approximately ten meters in length and 2.5 meters in height. Cooling capacities range from 300 kilowatts up to 1.5 megawatts per system. As deliveries may include multiple compressor packages, sometimes from different manufacturers such as GEA, Sabroe and Bitzer, the total cooling capacity of a single refrigeration plant can reach several megawatts.

Process control source code and documentation remain with the customer
Suomen Teollisuuskylmä operates according to open‑source principles in its projects, handing over the process control source code and all related documentation to the customer at project completion. This gives customers the freedom to modify and further develop their systems as needed. A natural continuation after project delivery is for Suomen Teollisuuskylmä to act as the site’s refrigeration maintenance provider.
Most deliveries also include the Insta Wahti® alarms extension, which forwards critical alarms related to disturbances or equipment faults directly to the customer’s on‑call personnel. Alarm notifications are also sent to Suomen Teollisuuskylmä.
“Our deliveries come with a two‑year warranty period, during which alarm data provides us with valuable insight into system performance. Based on this information, we fine‑tune operations and identify potential issues,” Purhonen explains.

Scalable expertise supports project delivery
According to Purhonen, Insta’s size and broad expertise provide a clear advantage in project delivery.
“Operations have been reliable throughout, and the expertise is not dependent on a single individual. When several projects have been running simultaneously, Insta has been able to allocate resources internally to keep schedules on track,” he notes.
Purhonen also highlights the smooth and flexible nature of the collaboration.
“The personnel have been professional and attentive. We have received quick answers to our questions and prompt support in problem situations,” he summarizes.
