Insta will deliver a substation solution to Fortum's Kalla pilot plant, which produces hydrogen through electrolysis.
Fortum Power and Heat Oy is building a hydrogen production test plant in the Källa area of Loviisa. Construction of the plant started in summer 2024 and the plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Insta Automation will be responsible for the electricity distribution for the Kalla pilot plant. Insta will supply a modular substation solution including electrolysis distribution transformers, the plant's self-loading transformer, medium-voltage transformer, PJ centres and DCS system for the automation centres in the substation. Our goal is to manage the entire electrical distribution of the pilot plant reliably and efficiently.
The pilot plant will produce hydrogen by electrolysis. Hydrogen produced using renewable electricity can serve as an alternative to fossil fuels and fossil-based raw materials in industries such as steel and fertilizer production. The project will provide valuable information on the design of larger-scale hydrogen production plants and support the evaluation of future hydrogen production opportunities.
