Insta began as Hämeenlinna Seudun Vesi’s automation supplier in 2013. Since then, the cooperation has expanded into a comprehensive partnership covering system maintenance, development, and lifecycle services.Insta has developed the Insta Wahti® Support system together with HS‑Vesi, enabling customers to review the documentation of their automation systems as part of Insta’s lifecycle services.

Insta currently has more than 30 maintenance and lifecycle service agreements in the water utility, energy, and stage technology sectors. Lifecycle‑wide maintenance primarily means proactive equipment maintenance and servicing, updates to system software and cybersecurity services, and other work aimed at ensuring the continuous and faultless operation of the entire system technology.
The Support portal was used by HS‑Vesi in a pilot phase for approximately one year, and in 2014 the service was also launched for other maintenance and lifecycle service contract customers. In addition to reviewing documentation, Support enables customers to update software and place work orders for deliveries of lower priority.
With Insta Wahti® Support, documentation and software remain up to date
Electrical and automation engineer Tomi Lager from HS‑Vesi uses Support in his daily work.
"I regularly order small tasks via Support. The work order specifications are saved, and Insta carries out the orders when there is less other work. With Support, documentation and software stay up to date, as the latest versions are always available. Documents can be accessed on an iPad wherever one happens to be – whether the on‑call technician is next to a faulty measuring device or motor, or even at home. Remote access connections via the iPad are also in daily use. The duty supervisor carries an iPad throughout their on‑call period, and when necessary, they can remotely access a computer located in the control room using it", Lager explains.
"Connecting the iPad to the automation system was originally Insta’s idea, which I have further developed to suit our own use."
Finland’s first agreement between a water utility and an automation supplier in accordance with SOPIVA guidelines
HS‑Vesi operates in the areas of ten former municipalities or cities and is also responsible for the water services of the Panssariprikaati (Armoured Brigade), meaning that there is plenty of work involved in standardizing legacy systems. Regionally, it is one of the most extensive water utilities in Finland.
"From a data communications perspective and due to the wide range of system‑technical solutions, HS‑Vesi is a very challenging environment. The challenge is addressed by building the water utility system in accordance with a lifecycle model so that the system now being built will serve for as long as possible", says Jyri Stenberg, Vice President at Insta.
The agreement between Insta and HS‑Vesi on the maintenance and servicing of water utility automation systems is Finland’s first agreement between a water utility and an automation supplier that complies with the SOPIVA guidelines issued by the National Emergency Supply Agency. Under the agreement, Insta develops, among other things, disturbance tolerance and service reliability through continuity planning as well as close cooperation between the client and the supplier.
Tomi Lager describes the cooperation with Insta as smooth:
"One of Insta’s strengths is its personnel – operations are in very competent hands. Insta has a high standard of quality and a strong, positive way of working".
