Case Lahti Energia: Insta delivered instrumentation as well as electrical supply and field enclosures for the boiler plant at the Kymijärvi III bioenergy plant

InstrumentationGreen transition

Insta delivered instrumentation for Lahti Energia’s Kymijärvi III bioenergy plant currently under construction. Environmental friendliness has been a key guiding principle for the project, and Kymijärvi III will be the cleanest plant in Finland using similar types of fuels.

Lahti Energia’s Kymijärvi III project is currently in the commissioning and testing phase. The plant, which replaces the Kymijärvi I coal-fired plant, will in future provide heating for the city of Lahti together with the Kymijärvi II plant. The plant has a heat production capacity of approximately 200 megawatts, and with additional investment it can also be converted to produce electricity.

The new bioenergy plant uses certified wood-based fuels such as forest residue chips, energy fractions from thinning operations, and by-products from sawmills.

Instrumentation delivered on schedule with strong expertise

The plant includes a circulating fluidized bed boiler, whose combustion process is more environmentally friendly compared to other combustion technologies. The boiler supplier for the plant is Sumitomo SHI FW, and Insta delivered the instrumentation as well as the electrical supply and field enclosures for the instrumentation scope of the boiler plant.

Sumitomo SHI FW’s site installation supervisor Jari Voutilainen praises Insta for its flexibility and expertise.

"Insta’s strengths are its skilled and motivated personnel and its experience in large-scale projects," Voutilainen summarizes.

At peak times, Insta had 24 installers working on site. The total number of working hours amounted to 17,000, and the project was completed on schedule. Insta’s share of the project lasted from January 2019 to the end of October.

Environmental responsibility guiding the project

With the new plant, Lahti Energia will shift more than 85% of its energy production to renewable and recycled fuels. The plant features efficient heat recovery, and a new type of purification process has been developed for condensate water. Thanks to this process, the condensate can be purified to a quality even cleaner than drinking water. Fly ash from flue gases is recycled back into forests as nutrients or reused in construction and earthworks.

Taking the environment into account is a natural part of Insta’s business and a prerequisite for its continuity. Products and services delivered to environmental technology projects account for more than one third of Insta Automation’s revenue.
