The Wireless Innovation Forum (WInnForum) has approved Insta DefSec, a European provider of defense and security solutions, as a CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) Root CA Operator. The approval enables Insta DefSec to act as a PKI Root of Trust in the CBRS ecosystem. Security in CBRS is built upon PKI and digital certificates, providing e.g. device authentication and encryption of communications.
The approval was based on a third party audit, assessing Insta DefSec’s ability to fulfill the requirements defined by WInnForum. “Insta DefSec is proud of the approval by WInnForum as a key security party in the CBRS ecosystem. It indicates that our processes and services comply with the strict security requirements set by WInnForum. Furthermore, it is a proof of our world-leading expertise in the PKI area and capability of providing high-security CA services globally“, says Marko Hautakangas, Vice President, Cyber Security at Insta DefSec.
CBRS employs a multi-tier PKI infrastructure, consisting of Root CAs and Sub CAs, to enable trust relationships between its various communicating parties. WInnForum’s approval will enable Insta DefSec to provide CBRS Root CA services for other CAs in the PKI hierarchy. Role of the CBRS Root CA is to certify Sub CAs from other CA providers, which will then issue end-entity certificates to be embedded in CBRS devices, e.g. smartphones.
“The members of the Wireless Innovation Forum are excited to add Insta DefSec to our list of approved CBRS PKI Root Certificate Authorities”, says Lee Pucker, CEO of the Wireless Innovation Forum. “These CAs are a critical foundational element of the security services required by the CBRS ecosystem, including authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation.”
