Kemijoki and Insta have signed an agreement to renew the electrical systems of the Inkeroinen hydroelectric power plant. The project is the companies' first joint contract and is significant in its scale.
Kemijoki Oy and Insta have entered into an agreement to modernize the electrical systems of the Inkeroinen hydropower plant, located on the Kymi River in Kouvola. Commissioned in 1922, the plant is one of Finland’s historic hydropower facilities. The modernization project is the first collaboration between Kemijoki and Insta and represents a major undertaking for both companies.
The electrical system upgrade will be delivered as a turnkey project and includes the construction of an extension to the Anjalankoski 110 kV substation. Insta will serve as the main contractor for the substation extension, taking responsibility for all site operations related to the construction work.
As part of the substation extension and the delivery of the new electrical systems, Insta will renew the power distribution system, generator protection systems, and synchronization systems at the Inkeroinen hydropower plant. The project commenced in September 2022 and is expected to be completed in October–November 2024. Insta’s turnkey delivery includes project management, engineering, network studies, equipment procurement and deliveries, installations, testing, and commissioning.
High-Quality and Reliable Electrical Systems Enable Secure Power Generation and Distribution
The renewal project takes into account the requirements of plant operation and maintenance and their importance to power generation. The modernization will significantly improve the reliability of electricity production as well as the overall dependability and availability of the plant. At the same time, troubleshooting and fault diagnostics will become easier and more efficient.
The Inkeroinen hydropower plant generates an average of 80 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the yearly power consumption of approximately 11,400 four-person households. A capacity upgrade was carried out on three of the plant’s generating units in 1993–1994, increasing the plant’s output by around 20 percent. The plant’s fourth generating unit, known as the “museum unit,” remains in active operation.
