Insta will deliver an automation solution for Porvoon vesi’s new water treatment plant, where a new limestone filtration facility will be built to replace the existing plant. The objective of the project is to improve the quality of tap water and secure the distribution of clean drinking water.

Porvoon vesi is upgrading its secondary main groundwater intake and water treatment plant into a limestone filtration facility. The upgrade is driven by the need to strengthen water treatment quality and ensure reliable water services for the residents of Porvoo well into the future. The groundwater intake in question is Porvoon vesi’s main groundwater intake and artificial groundwater plant, producing drinking water and artificial groundwater for the central areas of Porvoo as well as Ilola, Sikilä and Myllykylä.

Insta will supply the modernized plant with an automation solution based on Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 technology, integrated into Porvoon vesi’s comprehensive drinking water control system. The redundant system is highly reliable. A similar system is already in use at the Saksala water treatment plant, and a unified system provides significant benefits for lifecycle management and maintenance, ranging from spare parts availability to technology expertise.

The project represents an important continuation of the long-standing cooperation between Insta and Porvoon vesi, as Insta’s first large-scale water utility automation project began more than 25 years ago with the comprehensive modernization of the automation system at the Porvoo water treatment plant. This cooperation has also laid the foundation for Insta’s expertise in water utility analytics and optimization.

The new facility will be connected to Insta’s Opti master program. Based on forecasts, the program calculates setpoint values for production plants, booster pumping stations and valve stations. By ensuring the steady pumping of raw water around the clock, the program helps maintain highly consistent drinking water quality.

The estimated completion date of the project is in the latter half of 2027.

Limestone alkalization supports long-term water treatment

Limestone alkalization is a method in which water is passed through crushed limestone. Slowly dissolving calcium carbonate increases the water’s pH level, raises alkalinity, or the water’s buffering capacity, and reduces the corrosiveness of water in pipelines.

The upgrade provides the water supply network with improved protection against corrosion, extending the service life of pipelines and reducing the dissolution of metals into the water. The method supports a long-term approach to water treatment, emphasizing water quality, operational reliability and the safe distribution of drinking water.

Automation plays a key role in water utilities when plant operations need to be managed reliably, safely and cost-effectively. With more than 25 years of experience in the water sector, Insta delivers solutions where digitalization, data utilization, analytics and cybersecurity support operational reliability and proactive decision-making. Insta’s water utility services include engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) design and turnkey deliveries for water abstraction and distribution as well as wastewater conveyance and treatment.
